Part 6, The Treasure of Lady Travier

This entry is part of 7 in the series The Treasure of Lady Travier

Tada!!!!! The last part of “The Treasure of Lady Travier” is finally here! I hope you like it:

IMG_4365

I stared at Opal waiting for her decision to either abandon me for money or to stay and sit eternally with me.

IMG_4369

“I’m going with you, Miss Catalina,” Opal nodded.

IMG_4374

I stared blankly. Why did I not feel surprised?

IMG_4373

Catalina shook Opal’s hand, “I knew you’d see it the right way.”

IMG_4376

She turned to me. “Have fun rotting, Dexter Malcome.”

IMG_4383

Opal approached me, “Dex, this is what I have to do. I’m sure you know why.”

IMG_4380

I laughed, “Yeah, of course, you just had to do this to me again, because no matter how hard you try you can’t resist money.”

IMG_4381

Opal stared at me firmly, “Dex how could…” she seemed angry, but she wouldn’t finish the statement, “I’ve got to go now…”

IMG_4384

I stared after them. I tried to remain calm as I thought about the situation. Why had Catalina wanted a detective to go with her anyway? Couldn’t she just present herself after the bomb without one of us? How could she get a bomb into the secure location of the chapel unless it was the day of an open event, like the wedding?

IMG_4385

Then another question came to my mind. If she had disposed of Julia, then who would be suspected of the bombing?

IMG_4387

My eyes widened. What if she was going to frame Opal for the bombing?! That’s why she wanted one of us to go with her! I started to get angry. If Opal had been willing to stayed, it would have been much harder for Catalina to explain the bomb.

IMG_4390

A sudden surge of energy ran through me. I had to save the King and future Queen of France.

IMG_4392

I pulled on the rope with as much might as I could muster, the tightness practically began to cut off circulation in my hands.

IMG_4396

Suddenly, I faltered forward onto my feet. The bonds had broken.

IMG_4397

I stood in confusion a moment. That had seemed too easy, but could it have been I was overestimating a child?

IMG_4399

I did not know. I did not have time to think about it. I had to run. I had to save the wedding from going up into ashes. I was determined.

IMG_4398

And when I was determined about something, nothing could stop me from achieving my goal.

IMG_4400

I made it. I busted into the doors of the chapel.

IMG_4404

“Everybody, FREEZE!” I yelled.

IMG_4408

“NO Dex!” Opal yelled standing in front, “You freeze!” She had a picture frame in her hand. There was no sign of Catalina.

“Why on earth, should I do that!” I yelled back in anger, “I’m practically saving you from being framed for a bombing.”

IMG_4409

“I know Dex,” Opal said, “she said if I risked it, once she became Queen she would make sure I was safe.”

IMG_4415

I stood in stunned silence. Why was Opal talking about this in open public? “And you believed her?” I asked.

IMG_4416

“No Dex, of course not! Dex, I was just trying not to seem suspicious, so that I could stop her, and figure out the bomb.”

IMG_4418

“She gave me the detonator.”

IMG_4428

Everyone in the room screamed and stepped back. Lady Travier spoke up, “Opal, what is going on?! I thought you had found my treasure!”

IMG_4420

I looked at the picture frame in Opal’s hand. “Don’t lie to me. The bomb is the picture, isn’t it?”

IMG_4440

I stepped forward.

IMG_4429

“DEX STOP!” Opal yelled, “I’m not holding the bomb! I figured it out, that’s what she wants you to think so you’ll come near the altar. Smuggling a bomb on an object would be too hard. She told me that you would escape. She told me you would come here. Dex, you are the bomb!”

IMG_4435

I stepped back, “What?!”

IMG_4423

If you walk past this detonator or I press the button, which I’m not going to do, you will explode. She must have planted it on you when she knocked you out.”

“Who?!” Lady Travier pleaded.

IMG_4444

“Madame,” Opal said turning to Lady “Your daughter, and treasure, Catalina Travier has constructed a plan for your murder.”

IMG_4442

“No… she wouldn’t…” the lady whispered.

IMG_4446

“I’m so sorry,” Opal replied.

IMG_4451

“Dex, Trust me,” Opal said, “back up.”

IMG_4439

“How do I know, you’re not just deceiving me and everyone here, Opal? I could be backing away from the real bomb.”

“Just back up and I’ll follow you out… Trust me.”

IMG_4450

I took a step back.

IMG_4452

Opal took a step forward.

IMG_4454

I stepped back.

IMG_4455

Opal stepped forward.

IMG_4457

“Good, let’s keep going,” Opal said.

IMG_4458

We made it outside.  “Ok… so where’s the bomb on me?”

IMG_4463

She set the frame on the ground. “I have no idea, why don’t you start by…”

IMG_4465

“Opal Davis,” Catalina stepped out in front of us. She had a scowl on her face. “I suppose I underestimated you…”

IMG_4469

“You can’t win Catalina, I’m not detonating this bomb. I don’t care about money anymore.”

IMG_4473

I looked at Opal. I could not believe my ears.

IMG_4471

“You are certainly not making things easy for me,” Catalina sighed, “Well, if you are going to be such a caring little dear now… I guess I’ll have to threaten you with something you care about. Like… Dexter.”

“No…” Opal began.

IMG_4478

I gasped. Catalina had knocked Opal to the ground.

“Opal!” I yelled.

“DEX, TAKE OFF YOUR JACKET!”

My eyes widened. That could be where the bomb was.

IMG_4480

I began to pull off my jacket as fast as possible.

IMG_4481

In mere seconds Catalina had the remote, “Say goodbye to Mr. Malcome.”

IMG_4482

Opal was on her feet, “DEX!”

IMG_4484

She pushed me just as I threw my jacket in the air.

IMG_4485

We fell to the ground and all became black…

IMG_4488

Beep… Beep… Beep…

IMG_4489

I sat up in a hospital bed, “OPAL!”

IMG_4491

“Finally awake, I see… or don’t see… they still haven’t gotten me a new pair of glasses… ugh…” Opal grunted in a neighboring bed.

IMG_4494

I sighed, “Uhh… you’re… Not. Dead.”

IMG_4493

“You think?” She asked in her sarcastic way, “For your information, neither is Catalina. They inform me she has been taken into custody though. Her mother wants to apologize to us for being so secretive. She knows now it was riskier to NOT tell us what the treasure was. She plans to have a long conversation with her daughter and apologize for not being there for her after Mr. Travier died.”

IMG_4495

“Wow,” I was silent a moment, “And… uh… thanks for… saving me…”

IMG_4501

“Thanks for trusting me,” she replied, “and besides I owed it to you BIG time.”

IMG_4509

“True…” I smiled. “In fact, I think you owe me a few more. You left me for dead multiple times remember. I even save your life recently. So… I look forward to working with you in the future.”

IMG_4512

She grinned, “Yeah… I guess we essentially have to be a team now.”

IMG_4511

Essentially,” I repeated.

IMG_4487

I lied back down. “But not right now. Right now, I need you not to bother me while I sleep.”

I could hear Opal chuckle.
