The 30’s, Part Nine!

This entry is part 9 of 10 in the series The 30's
Hey everybody!!! *Waves* It part nine already? Wow! Also sorry that this was late, my weeks can get pretty busy, but I have good news! I will be getting the month of December mostly off of school! So that means I’l hopefully have lots of time to put together posts (Christmas related ones especially!!!! EEEEEEEEEEE!) Are you excited for Christmas? Alright, here is part nine of The 30’s!
Here are the characters:
  • Kit plays herself.
  • Lanie (my sister’s doll) plays Sterling Howard (A boarder at the Kittredge house, and son of Mrs. Howard).
  • Raven plays Ruthie.

RUTHIE? OOOOOH… What is going to happen?

I sat up in bed. The night was still. I couldn’t sleep. Yesterday had been really crazy. I had told everyone the whole story and finally got them to believe me. Mr. Gibson was the hardest to convince, but he was eventually persuaded. Joan looked a little shocked… and hurt. Everyone else was very surprised. The detective asked me for Ruthie’s address.

I hesitantly gave it to her, and that was that. Edward took Sterling and me home. Sterling didn’t say a word. When we got home I went to my room. Sterling stayed outside and bounced his ball a little. Edward left. The rest of the day I just read my book and thought. After that, I went to bed. Well… kind of.

I was still thinking about Ruthie. The police had gone to her house by order of the detective. What is going to happen to her? I worried.

I heard someone climbing up the stairs. “Who is it?” I whispered.

“Hi Kit.”

“Sterling! Come! Sit!”

He slowly sat next to me on my bed.

“Can’t Sleep?” I guessed.

“Yeah,” he sighed.

“Me too,” I responded.

“Kit,” He began seriously, “I’m sorry that I didn’t talk to you yesterday. I was just so… shocked. I… I had a hard time believing that… Ruthie,” He stopped for a second,”…would do that. You and I know more about her than any of the adults that were there. So… why? Why would Ruthie… steal?” He begged.

I looked sadly at him, “I don’t know… I was shocked too. A little while back, Ruthie and I were sitting in my room, on the bed, like we are now. As you know, her dad lost his job. I guess they were really struggling financially. She expressed to me how worried she was. At that time she had already robbed the store once. I guess she thought she could… help her dad.”

“It was still wrong.” Sterling pleaded.

I took a deep breath, “By expressing her feelings to me she might have been trying to make things feel right in her mind. But… no matter how much she tried, she can’t make a wrong… feel right, because it’s not.”

“Wow, Kit,” He smiled a little,”You actually sounded smart there for a second.”

“Hey!” I acted offended, but I was actually smiling internally.

He was serious again, “I hope she’ll be ok.”

I nodded. “I…”

*Screech* There was a noise downstairs.

“Kit, did you hear that?”

“Unfortunately… yes.”

“There it’s again!” Sterling exclaimed.

We stood up and looked in the direction of the stairs.

“Let’s go!” I said excitedly.

“You’re daring,” Sterling responded, still looking down the stairs.

“I know.” I grinned.

“Fine,” Sterling gave in, “let’s go down, but quietly!”

Slowly but surely Sterling lead the way down to the living room. Suddenly, we heard a shuffling. “Wh-who’s there?” Sterling asked the darkness.

“Sterling! Come on! Stop being so…”

“Hey, look, a pearl bracelet!” I pointed to the table. I peered closer. Then I looked up …………………..I thought I saw a person in the darkness!

I gasped. “Ruthie?”

“What?” Sterling asked, “Did you say, ‘Ruthie’?”

We heard someone scurrying away.

I quickly pushed Sterling out of the way. “Ruthie! Stop!” All was still until………………….there was the sound of sobbing. Then, out of the shadows…

Ruthie emerged with a tear streaked face.

“RUTHIE!” I yelled. I ran towards her and enveloped her in a humungous hug.

Shocked, Sterling stood frozen in the corner. “Ruthie?” he whispered.

“It’s ok, Ruthie, don’t cry.” I comforted.

She sniffled, “N-no, Kit, it’s not.”

I sat her down in a chair. “Hold on.”

I grabbed the other chair and shoved it over by her.

I plopped myself down in it.

Ruthie looked at me, “I am so so sorry, Kit!” She mourned.

“Oh, Ruthie! I forgive you!”

Sterling loosened up a little, “Me too, Ruthie.”

She sniffed and looked away. “I… was trying… to help my dad. Somehow, I drove myself to go above and beyond. I saw Betty’s Jewelry store and how low on security it was. It was perfect. I… I… started making plans…” she cried, “I can’t believe I did this!”

She directed herself towards us again. “I can’t believe it! Kit, you’re the best friend I ever had. Look! you are even willing to forgive me for what I did to you. You were right. When you told me that you were going to go the store, I panicked and told you not to get involved. It was because I was protecting myself. Just like you said…”

It was silent.

Clearing her throat Ruthie pushed the pearl bracelet I had seen early toward me. She spoke softly, “Yesterday, the police came to my house. They searched it. My parents had no idea what was going on. Eventually, they found everything I had stolen, except for this pearl bracelet. I had grabbed it before they saw and hid it from them. They couldn’t find it. My Mom and Dad were shocked…and so… disappointed. They fined us a huge amount of money! I guess I was too young to go to jail. Now my family is in even more in debt all because of me! The police left. I knew you must have been the one who told. I was really, really angry…”

A small tear went down her face. “Then… I realized what I had done and how wrong I was. I had thought I was helping my family but…” she choked back more tears, “I made it worse! Kit, I don’t want to keep this pearl bracelet! Please Kit, may you return it to Betty? I know it’s pathetic, but I don’t know if I… can face her.”

I grabbed the bracelet, “Of course, Ruthie! I’ll return it her first thing tomorrow!”

“Yeah!” Sterling added, “and I’ll come along.”

Ruthie sniffled, “You two are the best friends ever.” She stood up, “It’s late. I… I’m sorry to you up so long. I’ll go now.”

Before she left I raced over and enwrapped her in another surprise hug. “Thank You for confessing. You did the right thing. I know your family is going to get through this.”

“Hey,” said Sterling walking over, “don’t leave me out of that.”

We laughed as he came into the group hug.

Finally, we waved goodbye. “I’ll see you soon Ruthie!”

We stood for a little looking after her. That was a crazy night.

I put a hand on Sterling’s shoulder, “Well, I guess it’s time to go back to our beds. Maybe this time we can get some sleep.”

I started walking towards the stairs when Sterling spoke up, “Kit?”

“Yeah?” I turned around.

“Don’t you have to write an article for the newspaper about this robbery?”

My heart dropped. I had completely forgotten.

The End of Part Nine!
